Adam Kriegel is our Senior Manager of Business Development and is often the first Marathon team member many of our clients meet. Adam personifies Marathon’s consultative sales approach and takes pride in finding the right IT solution for each client’s unique needs.
How did you find your job at Marathon? I like to say it was in 2011 on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico at a destination wedding, when I met Dennis Amaral, Marathon’s Director of Sales. Of course, it was actually 3 months later when I moved back to NYC and heard Marathon was hiring.
Have you always been in the IT industry? What were you doing before joining Marathon? This is my first job in the world of technology. Before Marathon, I managed an award-winning restaurant, built an insurance agency from scratch, and still manage multiple real estate investments to this day.
How would you answer the cocktail party question of “what do you do?” Describe your role for Marathon. In reality, I introduce small- and medium-sized businesses to how Marathon Consulting can help more efficiently manage their IT. At a cocktail party, I would probably say “I work for a badass IT firm in Brooklyn.” I think people I meet are generally surprised that I have a geeky side, and I love painting the picture that I may be some technology wizard.
What kind of certifications and career experience do you have? While I’ve earned a Series 6, Series 63, insurance licenses for life, health, property and casualty, instructor certifications, etc., I learned more interning for the New York State Attorney General than all of those courses combined. The real life experience of meeting people and learning how to truly listen to their needs is something that can’t be taught in books.
What do you enjoy most about your role at Marathon? Meeting new people every day, and ideally being able to help make their lives easier.
What do you think sets Marathon apart? There are many things that differentiate Marathon Consulting from our competition. The thing that I hear from our partners the most is that we really care. I love that this gets through to them. The question of “what’s the best thing for the client?” settles every internal discussion.
What’s your favorite part about working at Marathon? Uncompromising reason. Saying “the people” would be easier, but this is what I love about the people I work with: everyone is reasonable about everything. There can always be a discussion, and even if there is an answer you don’t love, at least there is always a good reason why.
Our owners creating an employee stock participation plan is pretty cool too. This is the first job I’ve ever had where I didn’t own a part of the company and the new employee stock plan is a great opportunity for everyone at Marathon.
What do you like to do for fun? If you had a four day weekend, what would you do? Basketball, volleyball, reading, cooking, baking, and some manly stuff with tools to offset all the baking I like to do. :-)
A recent baking success were these apple cakes with the following modifications: I substituted nonfat Greek yogurt for the sour cream, used organic coconut oil instead of the butter, and replaced the sugar with organic coconut sugar. With the flour, I used 80% organic whole wheat and 20% coconut flour. I also mixed some pears in with the apples.
What is your dream vacation spot? I’ve got to visit our office in Colorado before I even think about going anywhere else.
Favorite sports team? New York Football Giants – although my fantasy football team always comes first.
Favorite touristy NYC thing to do or recommend out-of-towners do? Theater! And don’t spend your vacation waiting in line; buy your tickets in advance.
